Permit Applications

East Montpelier has zoning, subdivision, sign, and flood hazard regulations (see: Planning & Zoning Documents). The town does not, however, have a building code, although local projects fall under the state building codes for many categories of development. No development is allowed until all applicable town land use permits and approvals have been issued, unless the development is specifically exempted from permit requirements under Section 7.2 of the East Montpelier Land Use & Development Regulations. The town also requires Selectboard-issued access permits for curb-cuts on town roads and any work in the town’s road rights-of-way. In addition, the Town Administrator issues excess weight permits for overweight truck use of town highways.

The state regulates land development in many ways. For any project, even after applying for and receiving the relevant town permits/approvals, an applicant/permittee retains the obligation to identify, apply for, and obtain relevant state permits.
